The Reach One Queen Creek Juneteenth Festival is thrilled to announce a poetry contest for young talents as part of our annual celebration on June 15, 2024. This contest invites youth poets from across the community to express their creativity, celebrate African American history and culture, and share their unique voices through the power of words. We encourage entrants to draw inspiration from the themes of freedom, equality, and hope, which are central to the spirit of Juneteenth.
Exceptional entries will not only gain recognition but also have the chance to win exciting prizes. We have prepared awards for the most compelling, insightful, and artistically expressed poems. Participants will compete in different age categories, ensuring a fair and encouraging platform for all young poets. This is a wonderful opportunity for budding poets to showcase their talents, reflect on significant historical events, and possibly earn rewards for their creativity and hard work. Join us in celebrating Juneteenth with your verses and be part of a memorable community event!

"Whispers of Freedom" is a compelling theatrical journey that delves into the heart of Juneteenth, offering a poignant exploration of its historical significance and enduring legacy. This play is based on a 17 year old slave girl, Charlotte Brooks, that overheard the fact that slavery had been abolished for two years but the slaves were still being held captive. She got the word to other slaves and then fled with her daughter.

Performing for the second time at the Queen Creek Juneteenth Festival, Marlana-
Patrice will captivate the audience by revisiting the past through words and
music. She is guided by what the legendary Nina Simone once said: “An artist’s
duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times…” Native Clevelander
Marlana-Patrice has enjoyed performing at community events throughout the
Cleveland Metro and Greater Phoenix areas. Also, in Los Angeles and online. In
Phoenix, one of her most fulfilling was as an ensemble actress in Ntozake
Shange’s masterpiece, for colored girls who have considered suicide /
when the rainbow is enuf.
Marlana-Patrice’s memoir in verse, Taking Off My Black & White Saddle Shoes: Cleveland Poems debuts this summer. Copies will soon be available through
World Stage Press and the author (Release Date: May 19).
